Emerald ash borer located in Parkersburg

With the emerald ash borer’s arrival in Parkersburg, city crews are working to make sure the pest’s damages are kept at a minimum. Scott Barrett, a city public works employee, said that crews have removed a handful of trees that have been damaged by the beetle. The most recent one was removed in October, he said.

He said trees will be removed as they show signs of an infestation, but healthy ash trees will not be destroyed.

“We won’t remove all the trees just because we have so many ash trees in town,” Barrett said, “but we’ve seen a couple and have removed those.”

No ash tree is immune to an attack. The larval stage of the insect feeding on the inner layer of bark inhibits the movement of water and nutrients throughout the tree. Starved trees usually die within two to four years.
