Jacobs named outstanding cattleman

At the Butler County Cattlemen’s Banquet Saturday in Parkersburg, Eugene Jacobs was named Butler County Cattlemen’s Outstanding Cattleman of the year.

Jacobs and his wife are third-generation owners of the family farm, purchased in 1928. They started their first cow-calf pairs in 1972.

“The dream was black whiteface, and that didn’t happen,” Mrs. Jacobs said in her letter of nomination. “In 1999, we attended a sale in the southwestern part of Iowa, where we started the Red Angus cattle. After working 43.5 years on the farm, the cows have been taking up our time over the years. There are just no other people like those in the cattle industry.”

Holly Merritt, the Butler County ISU Extension and Outreach Coordinator, received the cattlemen’s service award. Accepting the award, she thanked the cattlemen for all they do for the Butler County 4-H and FFA beef weigh in and their work at the county fair.

There were over 140 in attendance at the banquet. Thick slices of prime rib from Fredericka Locker, potatoes, green beans, rolls and peach cobbler were served.
