DeVries hired as Drake men's hoops coach

    Published: April 4, 2018

Darian DeVries could have been a head coach for a college basketball program a long time ago.

When DeVries was introduced at last Friday's press conference as Drake University's new men's basketball head coach, the introduction from Drake athletic director Brian Hardin explained why the Bulldogs job was the right moment for DeVries.

"I didn't want to find someone that just wanted to be a Division I head coach," Hardin said. "I wanted to find someone that wanted to be the head coach at Drake University."

DeVries was the right man for that role, having been passed up for the Drake position at least twice before in recent years. But once again, the Bulldogs were looking to find a replacement for their latest departure, Niko Medved, who took a head-coaching job at Colorado State.

After 20 years with the Creighton men's basketball team, including 17 as an assistant coach, DeVries finally had his patience and persistence pay off and got his opportunity to come back a little closer to his hometown of Aplington.
