Falcon football soars to district title

PARKERSBURG – Last season, the Aplington-Parkersburg football team didn't win a game at home.

This Friday, the Falcons hope to pack Ed Thomas Field after A-P won the Class 2A District 3 title with a 59-12 win over Saydel in Parkersburg last Friday night.

The win guaranteed A-P a first-round home playoff game, which will be played against the Union Knights on the "Sacred Acre," with a 7 p.m. kickoff.

"This is something the kids were thinking about at the beginning of the year," A-P coach Alex Pollock said. "They wanted this to be a huge home-field advantage for us and all the offseason work and practice time has kinda all accumulated, you get into a situation with a great home crowd and a great fan base that makes the guys want to play as hard as they can and it feels great."

A-P didn't want the district title to be in doubt, scoring within 40 seconds after a big opening kickoff return from Sam Nolte translated into a series of Sam Thorn runs, the final one a 1-yard punch into the end zone.

Thorn finished with 14 carries for 109 yards and two touchdowns, with Sam Nolte adding 11 carries for 134 yards and two more scores. Lincoln Johnson contributed four carries and a second-quarter touchdown.

The Falcons also attacked through the air, with Carter Cuvelier finding Braden Good for a pair of first-half touchdowns as A-P's top receiver hauled in four passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns, increasing Good's season totals to 742 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on the season.

This offensive explosion was the final step for the Falcons in getting to the district title, a long way back after losing the first district game of the season to West Marshall.
