Falcons fight off Orabs for 3rd

DES MOINES – Dylan Ellis and the Aplington-Parkersburg seniors made the most of their final quarter of competitive basketball on Thursday afternoon.

Ellis lit up the scoreboard with three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and the Falcons ran away with a 65-52 victory over Sheldon in the Class 2A third-place game at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

A-P's final win-loss tally of 25-2 ties the 2014-15 team for most wins in a season, and the third-place finish ties for the best finish in the program's history. The Falcons were third in 1997 as well.

"It was good to get all 15 guys in, they can all say they played in the state tournament," A-P head coach Aaron Thomas said. "I hope they're proud of what they did, there's an awful lot for them to be proud of … and we'll put a nice trophy in our trophy case."

In his final game as a Falcon, Alec Oberhauser had 17 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, three steals and four blocks. Carter Cuvelier added 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Ellis stole the show in the home stretch, burying a dagger in the Orabs with nine points in A-P's game-clinching 19-2 run to end the game.

"Being on the court with this team is truly a blessing," Ellis said. "We came out firing in the fourth and got it done."
