Love for the land: a passion for ag

In this week’s Eclipse News-Review, you’ll find the annual ag tab, filled with stories of the farmers who make Butler and Grundy counties strong. Farming is a way of life. It’s not always easy, but it is the foundation of society.

“You can go a long time without a new car, but you can’t go long without food,” said Bruce Bixby, who farms near Allison.

Since 1960, when he purchased his first farm as just a teenager, Bixby has been among the many farmers who provide our nation with the rudiments of life. Today, Bixby farms with his wife Becky, son Eric and his wife Vikki and grandson Tyler.

Son Aaron, son-in-law Scott and their families are also all on the job to help with the family endeavor during planting and harvest.

“The thing I like is having the whole family together. I go out to the field, and I as grandpa get to work with my grandson. That’s pretty special,” said Bruce Bixby. “The first time I realized how special it was, Tyler was about 12 years old running the grain cart, and I thought, ‘What a good day to be working with my son and with my grandson.’”

It all started with a 4-H project and a plot of peas.
