A-P board discusses superintendent search, passes budget

The Aplington- Parkersburg school board received an update on the search for a new superintendent to replace Jon Thompson and passed its budget for the 2019- 2020 school years as presented during its regular meeting on Monday night.

Thompson told the board that spending levels are similar to the year prior, and between hiring a shared superintendent with Grundy Center and potentially not replacing a staff member who is retiring at the elementary, the district could save money by attrition. Board member Dave Schneiderman asked when the state would “wake up” on funding for schools and new money, known as Supplemental State Aid (SSA).

“You tighten the belt only as tight as you can without choking yourself. Our belt’s tight right now as far as cuts,” Thompson said. “There are things you can do, but they’re painful.”
