A-P softball fights for split with D-NH (PHOTOS)

DIKE – Hailey DeVries and the Aplington-Parkersburg softball team conquered the mental game, and it showed against Dike-New Hartford on Friday night.

After a deflating 10-run loss to an aggressive Wolverine team in Game 1, the Falcons were the aggressor in Game 2, putting up four runs in the fifth inning and hanging on for a 7-6 win in the nightcap and an NICL East split at Dike-New Hartford High School.

The Wolverines scored two runs in the seventh and had the potential tying run at second with one out, but Makenna Brouwer made a nice catch on a pop fly to shallow center for the second out and Falcons pitcher DeVries got the third out to end D-NH's late threat.

After a 14-4 loss in six innings in the first game, the Falcons had the right mentality to grab their first win in NICL East play since a 15-10 victory against Wapsie Valley on May 29.

"I just kept getting in my head to throw strikes," said DeVries. "It was a struggle at first but I just got it in my head to get three outs. … My teammates are always out there talking to me, keeping me upbeat and ready to play."
