Sprint to history: A-P girls win sprint medley relay title

DES MOINES – The scenario on Saturday morning was one that Gabby Hanken had seen play out time and time again this spring.

The Aplington-Parkersburg track and field senior was watching her freshman teammate, Sophia Jungling, sprinting to the finish line in the Class 2A sprint medley relay championship at Drake Stadium.

Jungling was going stride-for-stride with some of the best runners in state, but Hanken was convinced this was Jungling’s moment.

“If you’re neck and neck with her at the 100, you can do your best, but it’s probably not going to happen,” Hanken said. “I knew she had it.”

Sure enough, Jungling finished another stellar anchor leg for a talented Aplington-Parkersburg relay, capturing the school’s first ever title in the sprint medley relay in a time of 1:52.05. Peterson and Alta-Aurelia finished second in 1:52.30.
