Thunder outlast A-P boys

PARKERSBURG – Aaron Thomas knew the next three minutes for his team would be crucial.

The Aplington-Parkersburg boys basketball team had battled the two-time defending Class 1A champion Grand View Christian to a 22-22 tie at halftime.

"We were doing what we wanted but we knew they'd make some adjustments and come at us," Thomas said.

The Thunder scored seven unanswered points to start that pivotal three-minute stretch, and A-P couldn’t get the shots to fall to keep up in a 57-44 loss in A-P's home finale in Parkersburg last Tuesday night.

Grand View improved to 18-1 overall, while Aplington-Parkersburg stumbled to 13-5 before ending the regular season with two NICL East victories against Denver and Sumner-Fredericksburg at the end of last week.

A-P shot 16-of-51 from the field and 6-of-13 from the free-throw line in a difficult second half ending with the Thunder outscoring the Falcons 35-22.

"I thought going in that we'd need to make about 13 threes," Thomas said, "but I like the way we're fighting, the way we're competing and the way we're executing what we want to defensively."
