Magdalene Ruth DeVries

Magdalene Ruth DeVries, born the daughter of Andrew and Mame (Penning) Lupkes, on November 8, 1929, in Madison Township, Butler County. She attended Madison #9 country school near her home and graduated from Dumont High School in Dumont, Iowa, in 1949.
On February 19, 1954, Magdalene was united in marriage with Earl Lucas DeVries at Washington Reformed Church in rural Ackley, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple began farming near Austinville, Iowa. They later moved to a farm near Kesley, Iowa. Magdalene was a housewife and helped Earl with the farm work.
Magdalene was in fellowship with Hitesville Gospel Hall in rural Aplington. She was saved in July 1984, in Allison during meetings by Harold Paisley and Norman Crawford. Magdalene enjoyed quilting and sewing. She mowed her lawn, even up until three years ago. Magdalene and Earl enjoyed their vacation to Alaska and their visits to see relatives in Minnesota.
Magdalene died Friday April 18, 2025, at her home in Aplington of natural causes. Magdalene was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Mame Lupkes; a brother, Gaylord Lupkes; and a sister, Miriam Garrels.
Magdalene is survived by her husband of 71 years, Earl of Aplington; a sister-in-law, Patty Lupkes of Ackley; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services were held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Hitesville Gospel Hall, rural Aplington, Iowa, with Mr. Brandon Doll officiating. The Ushers for the service were Wes Swieter and Tommy Christopherson. The Congregation sang “When His Glory Paints The Sky,” “Love Lifted Me” and “Ivory Palaces.” The burial in the Hitesville Cemetery, rural Aplington, with Leland Buseman Collin Koop Jonathan Koop Arlen Kromminga Ron Wessels and Jason DeVries serving as Casketbearers. Sherry Swieter and Barbara Christopherson served on the Flower Committee.
Visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025, at the Redman Funeral & Cremation Services – Aplington Chapel in Aplington, (319)347-6275, and one hour before services at the Gospel Hall.
