A-P Quilters Club sews, donates quilts to local causes

In the basement of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, nine local women spend their Thursday mornings hard at work, stitching and sewing quilts to donate to local causes and organizations.

These women, who make up the Aplington Parkersburg Quilters, spend hundreds of hours each year creating these quilts in the hopes that they will bring comfort and joy to their recipients.

Last year, the group completed 175 quilts, and distributed 136 of them to local veterans, nursing homes around the county, the Adult Crisis Stabilization Center in Waterloo, the local Relay for Life, and the Hope Cancer Center for Women in Iowa City, to name a few. The group has also made quilts for disaster victims, and those affected by house fires, or tornadoes.

“Some of these people have nothing, and when we give quilts to them, it’s really special to see their faces light up and to see them smile,” said Jan Johnson, a longtime member of the A-P Quilters.

For all the women, retired nurses, office administrators and jacks-of-all-trades, quilting is a way to keep busy and spend time with people who share their same interests, while at the same time doing something good for others.
