Parkersburg council approves pickleball court contribution

The city of Parkersburg will pledge $5,000 to the pickleball court project with the potential for more after approving a contribution during Monday night’s regular council meeting.

Virgil Goodrich came before the council to provide an update on fundraising and explain the latest plans, which call for five pickleball courts and no basketball courts. So far, the project has received a total of $37,600, and Goodrich is still waiting to hear from a few potential donors. The city has received four bids, and, when including total costs all are around the $50,000 price range. Installation of the courts is set to begin in the spring of 2020.

“The good thing about working with Virgil is that he solves the problems before they become problems,” city administrator Chris Luhring said.

The council eventually voted 4-0, with Dan Bruns abstaining but “strongly supporting” the project, to contribute $5,000 with the potential fore more.

City Engineer Lee Gallentine provided information on the water main project and curb and gutter improvements, and the council unanimously approved several related motions.
