Renewed focus: Ranked A-P girls blast G-R

REINBECK – A loss to Sumner-Fredericksburg made the winter break a long one for the Aplington-Parkersburg girls basketball team.

The Falcons came back into the gym with intensity in practice in preparation for A-P's 2019 opener against G-R and rolled into Reinbeck for an 85-29 rout of the Rebels last Thursday.

A-P, ranked 10th in Class 2A, improved to 9-1 overall. G-R fell to 3-7.

Megan Johnson led the Falcons with 16 points. Sophia Jungling added 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals. Jenna Bruns scored 10 points and Jaycie Ellis added 12 points and a team-leading six rebounds.

Sumner-Fredericksburg defeated the Falcons 45-41 in Parkersburg on Dec. 20, ending the Falcons' undefeated start to the season and leaving A-P to sit on the loss over the extended break.

"Our five practices over break have been the most focused that we've been," A-P head coach Jason Berkey said. "The girls took that loss hard, and they came back focused and re-energized."
