STEM externship showcases Butler County’s Big Marsh

Waterloo East teacher Loren Thallacker’s summer plans include handfuls of millet and bird cages.

She’s helping staff at Big Marsh wetland in rural Parkersburg gather information on doves to document with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

This project is part of her STEM Teacher Externship set up through the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council.

The externships this summer allow more than 60 teachers throughout the state to work with STEM professionals to gain hands-on experience to bring back to the classroom.
