Eldon Nicklaus Peters, 85

Eldon Nicklaus Peters, age 85, of Parkersburg, Iowa, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.  He was born on December 3, 1937, in Parkersburg to Claus and Maulie (Nicklaus) Peters.  Eldon graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1955.  He received his B.A. Degree from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in 1959.  Eldon completed his M.A. Degree at Colorado State College (UNC) in 1964 and his Doctorate in Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1975.

Dr. Peters began his career in education in 1959 at Fayette Community School teaching industrial arts and driver’s education.  From 1968 – 1980, Eldon was a professor of education at Upper Iowa University in Fayette.  He taught at Salisbury State University, Salisbury, Maryland, returning to Iowa to help with his mother’s care.  Eldon joined the Education Department at the University of Northern Iowa in 1981 and retired in 2002.  During his tenure at UNI, he and Regena, his wife of 57 years, were privileged to supervise student teachers at American International Schools in England, France, Egypt, Spain, Austria, Italy and Honduras.

As an undergraduate, Eldon was a member of Phi Sigma Phi Fraternity and in Fayette was a Lions Club member serving several terms as President.  He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa education organization and was honored as Kappan of the Year in 2000.  Additionally, Eldon enjoyed polishing his cars, especially the ‘62 and ‘68 Corvettes, watching TV, reading, and traveling extensively.  He and Regena spent parts of many winters in Waikiki Beach, Hawaii.

Eldon is survived by his wife: Regena; sisters-in-law: Marcia (David) Machacek of Alburnett, and Leona (Joseph) Nichols of West Des Moines; nieces: Kristin (Ryan) Baker, Stephanie (Bobby) Ascher; Kelli (Dean) Weber and nephew: Michael (Desiree) Nichols; and eight great nieces and nephews.

A Celebration Of A Life Well-Lived was held at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at the Redman Funeral & Cremation Services in Parkersburg, with David Machacek officiating the service.  Pianist was Randy Aalderks.  Stan Thompson, accompanied by Amy Truax, sang “Oh Perfect Love”, “I Love You Truly” and “Jesus Loves Me”.  Inurnment was held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg.

Visitation was held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Redman Funeral & Cremation Services – Parkersburg Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be left at www.redmanfuneral.com
