Richard "Dickie" Uhlenhopp

Richard “Dickie” Uhlenhopp, age 78, of Waverly, Iowa, was born the son of Dick R. and Katheryn Elizabeth (Beenken) Uhlenhopp on June 4, 1943, at their home in Aplington, Iowa.  Dickie attended Parkersburg Schools.  In his younger years, Dickie attended Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg.  

Dickie lived in various group homes in communities around the area.  Dickie worked at North Star in Waverly.  

Dickie enjoyed participating in the running events at the Special Olympics in Des Moines and Ames.  He was even chosen to carry the torch for one of the Special Olympics.  Dickie enjoyed following the Wartburg Knights basketball team.  He loved to eat, but his favorite was cheeseburgers.  Dickie’s greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his two sisters.

Dickie died Thursday, February 3, 2022, at Denver Sunset Home in Denver, Iowa, of cancer.  Dickie is preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Katheryn Uhlenhopp; a sister and brother-in-law, Verna (Art) Izer; a brother, Delbert Unhenhopp; a brother-in-law, Bruno DeBeer; a niece, Belinda; and a nephew, Jeff Card.

Dickie is survived by his twin sister, Katheryn (Roger) Hartzell of Shell Rock, Iowa; his sister, Dorothy DeBeer of Parkersburg; and seven nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Dickie were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at the Redman Funeral & Cremation Services in Parkersburg with Pastor Nate Huisman officiating.  During the service, “How Great Thou Art” and “In The Garden” was played.  Burial was held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, with Steve Koenen, Blue Boyer, Al Harms, Keith Izer and Delbert Uhlenhopp serving as Casketbearers.  

Visitation was held one hour before services at Redman Funeral & Cremation Services.
