Richard Edward Young, 84

Richard Edward Young, age 84, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Oscar J. and Mabel C. (Lundy) Young on November 6, 1938, in Webster City, Iowa. In 1956, Richard graduated from Stanhope High School in Stanhope Iowa.  After graduation, he worked for a telephone gang installing new poles and wires.  He also belonged to the Iowa National Guard.  Richard attended the National School of Aeronautics in Kansas City and in 1958, began working in Chicago, Illinois, for Ozark Airlines at Midway.

While in Chicago, Richard met Nancy C. Wright and on October 29, 1960, they were united in marriage.  To this union, the couple had two sons, Scott and Steven.  In 1964, Richard’s job transferred to Waterloo, Iowa, where they also resided.  In 1968, the family moved to New Hartford, Iowa.  After working there for 23 years, Ozark was sold to TWA and Richard was transferred to Kansas City.  In 2000, Richard moved back to New Hartford.  In 2001, Richard retired after working in the Airline industry for 42 years.  

Richard was a former member of the New Hartford United Methodist Church.  Richard served as mayor of New Hartford for two terms, then again in 2001, after moving back to New Hartford when he was written in on the ballot and was elected.  Richard was a member of the Lions Club and the Mended Hearts.  Richard enjoyed the Norwegian culture and his travel to Norway.

  On Thursday, February 16, 2023, Richard died at Parker Place in Parkersburg.  Richard is preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Nancy in 1997; his parents, Oscar and Mabel Young; and his siblings, Jon Young and Judy Cramer.

Richard is survived by two sons, Scott Young of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Steve (Candy) Young of Parkersburg; two grandchildren, Ariel (Blake Koschmeder) Young and Hunter Young; two great grandchildren, Elijah and Sebastian; and one brother-in-law, Larry Cramer of Des Moines, Iowa.

A Private Family Funeral Service will be.held 6:00 p.m., Friday, February 24, 2023, at Redman Funeral & Cremation Services – Parkersburg Funeral Home in Parkersburg.  Pastor Kay Christie from United Methodist Church in Dayton and Harcourt, Iowa, will officiate the service.  Burial will be held at the Oak Hill Cemetery in New Hartford.

Public Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2023, at Redman Funeral & Cremation Services – Parkersburg Funeral Home in Parkersburg.  Memorials may be directed to the family.  Online condolences may be left at www.redmanfuneral.com
