Roy Hassman

Roy Allen Hassman, age 77, of Parkersburg, Iowa, was born the son of Harold and Elizabeth (Schoeman) Hassman on February 17, 1944, rural Parkesburg, Iowa. He received his education in Parkersburg and graduated from the Parkersburg High School in 1962. Roy served in the United States National Guard from 1964 – 1970.
On January 31, 1970, Roy was united in marriage with Velda Oelmann at the East Friesland Presbyterian Church, rural Ackley, Iowa. The couple made their home and farmed south of Sinclair. Roy enjoyed being a hog and grain farmer most of his life. He currently was retired but never really stopped working on their farm. He enjoyed cutting wood and cleaning up the timber and bringing it back to burn.
For many years Roy was in fellowship with the New Hartford Gospel Hall and was saved through the meaningful verse Acts 16:31 on November 10, 1970. Currently he was in fellowship with Bethany Bible Chapel in Cedar Falls. Roy and Velda enjoyed attending many Gospel concerts.
Roy loved spending time with his grandchildren, often greeted them with candy and was a kid at heart. He very much enjoyed traveling with Velda, taking several cruises, trips to Branson and wintering in Florida. Roy enjoyed fishing with his buddies at Lake of the Woods. He often enjoyed a cup of coffee with his friends through the years at Willie’s Feed Store, Sinclair Elevator and this past year at Darwin’s shed. In his spare time, he enjoyed rough wood working and Sudoku puzzles.
Roy passed away on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, at Unity Point – Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, from complications of Covid-19. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dale Hassman and another in infancy, his father-in-law, Duane Oelmann, one sister-in-law, Geri Oelmann.
Roy is survived by his wife of 52 years, Velda Hassman of Parkersburg; four daughters, Trisha (Jason) Cashman of Cedar Falls, Tamara Hassman of Marion, Traci (Matt) Thomas of Norwalk, and Tonya (James) Muller of Cedar Falls; nine grandchildren, Bryer, Payce, Macoy and Landry Cashman, Avery and Cameron Thomas, and Haysley, Harper, and Kysen Muller; two sisters, Betty (Paul) Klingenborg of Parkersburg, and Eileen (Darwin) Hofer of Parkersburg; sister-in-law, Norma Hassman of Cedar Falls; his mother-in-law, Ruth Oelmann of Ackley; and four brothers-in-law, Jade Oelmann, Randy (Darla) Oelmann, Lee (Cheryl) Oelmann, and Gary (Katie) Oelmann.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., on Monday, April 5, 2021, at Bethany Bible Chapel in Cedar Falls. George Farber and Dave Wilson officiated the service. Pianist was
Barb Anderson and she accompanied the congregation as they sang “Blessed Assurance” and “How Great Thou Art”. Ray and Nancy Hemmer sang “Haven of Rest” and “What A Day That Will Be”. Gloria Smith was the accompanist for the Hemmers. Burial was held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, with Daran Klingenborg, Doyle Klingenborg, Jeff Hassman, Brad Hofer, Joe Adam and Buddy VanderHolt serving as Casketbearers.
Visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at Redman Funeral & Cremation Services in Parkersburg and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to Bethany Bible Chapel or the family. Redman Funeral & Cremation Services in Parkersburg was in charge of arrangements.
